Innovation
A 400,000-square-foot electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft manufacturing facility adjacent to Covington Municipal Airport. Archer Aviation is investing $118 million and creating over 1,000 jobs to produce its "Midnight" air taxi here, with production capacity expandable to 2,300 aircraft per year. This places CVC at the center of next-generation aviation manufacturing in the Southeast. The facility is not open for public tours, but its presence has transformed the economic and aviation profile of Newton County.
Historic District
The heart of Covington and one of the most recognized town squares in the South. The 1884 Newton County Courthouse anchors a square lined with antebellum architecture, independent shops, and restaurants. Atlanta Journal-Constitution named it "Best Town Square in Atlanta" (2018). Southern Living called Covington the "Prettiest Small Town in Georgia" (2017). The buildings here survived Sherman's March, and walking the square reveals a town that has been continuously lived in and cared for since 1822.
Film & Television
Covington served as the fictional town of "Mystic Falls" across all eight seasons of The Vampire Diaries (2009-2017). The town square, the courthouse, numerous homes, and streets throughout Covington appeared in the series. The Mystic Grill restaurant occupies the actual filming location. Self-guided walking tours pass the Lockwood Mansion (a private residence), the town clock tower, and dozens of other recognizable sites. Covington has embraced its television heritage with annual fan events and a dedicated visitor culture.
Heritage
Newton County was established in 1821, carved from the former Creek and Cherokee territory. The county seat of Covington was incorporated the following year. Over 250 films and more than 1,000 television episodes have been produced in and around Newton County, earning it the title "Hollywood of the South." Notable productions beyond The Vampire Diaries include My Cousin Vinny, Remember the Titans, Sweet Magnolias (Netflix), and Dukes of Hazzard. Major employers including a Meta data center, Bridgestone, Michelin, and Takeda anchor the region's economic growth alongside the film industry.
Academic
The original campus of Emory University, founded in 1836. Oxford College operates as the liberal arts division of Emory, offering a small-campus experience with the resources of a major research university. The campus is notable for its historic buildings, including Seney Hall and Few Hall, and its role in the founding narrative of one of the South's most respected universities. The surrounding village of Oxford maintains a quiet, academic character distinct from Covington's commercial energy.
